Aviation group of aerobatics “Russian Knights” was formed on April 5, 1991 on the basis of the 1st aviation squadron of the Center for the display of aviation equipment at the Kubinka airfield in the Moscow region.
Today, on the day of their jubilee, the crews of the “Russian Knights” began training on the Su-30SM aircraft of the aviation unit of the military parade in Moscow.
On the eve of the 30th anniversary of the air group, the pilots completed the program for the development of the latest multipurpose Su-35S fighters, completing the tasks as intended within the framework of tactical flight exercises and flights with the combat use of aviation weapons against air targets.
The crews of the aerobatic team are regular participants in various international air shows, representing the Aerospace Forces of Russia, as well as many aviation events held in various regions of the Russian Federation.
Since 2015, they have become regular participants in the Army International Military-Technical Forum and the International Army Games. Also, in recent years, the aerobatic team has been actively involved in patriotic education and attracting young people to service in aviation, increasing the prestige and authority of military service in our country. They are indispensable participants in the military-patriotic action “Contract Service – Your Choice”, which takes place in all regions of Russia.
The first composition of the aerobatic team of six aircraft included: the leader – Vladimir Basov, the left wingman – Alexander Dyatlov, the right wingman – Sergey Ganichev, the tail wing – Vladimir Bukin, the left outer – Vladimir Bazhenov, the right outer – Alexander Lichkun.
On August 24, 1991, literally four and a half months later, the name “Russian Knights” was first heard abroad – at the first Polish air show in Poznan. Then the group commander Vladimir Bazhenov presented the solo aerobatics program. This visit became the starting point in creating the individual image of the “Russian Knights”.
In the fall of 1991, the Russian Knights have already appeared in the skies of England. Basov, Dyatlov, Ganichev, Bukin, Bazhenov and Lichkun on the Su-27 marched in formation over the Queen’s residence in Scotland, who immediately appreciated the formidable and clear shining formation of the winged six. The visit to England was continued by the group’s performances at the Lukers and Finningley airshows, where the Knights flew with the British Red Arrows squadron.
In subsequent years, “Russian Knights” with dignity represented the aviation of our country in France, USA, China, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Norway, Luxembourg, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Turkmenistan, Finland, the Republic of Belarus. Since 1993, they have been indispensable participants in the MAKS international air show. The aerobatics of the “Russian Knights” were repeatedly applauded by the spectators of the Seaplane Aviation Salon in Gelendzhik, as well as the International Naval Salon in St. Petersburg.
In 2004, the complex of demonstrations included a joint flight of the aerobatic groups “Russian Knights” and “Swifts” consisting of nine aircraft (five Su-27 and four MiG-29) in the “diamond” formation with the implementation of a full complex of aerobatics, leading – Igor Tkachenko. This fact in itself became a world record in the history of aviation. This nine got the name “kuybin diamond”.
