In the Aerospace Forces, air defense missions are performed by the 1st Special Air Defense and Missile Defense Army of the Air Defense and Missile Defense Forces. The main task of the unification is to protect the city of Moscow and the Central industrial region of the country, to cover the facilities of the highest echelon of state and military administration, industry and energy, groupings of the Armed Forces and transport communications from attacks from the air and space.

The length of the borders of responsibility of the 1st air defense-missile defense army is about 1200 km, covering the territory of about 10 regions and one republic of Russia. The combat composition of the formation includes anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense units that provide protection of the airspace over the capital of the Russian Federation, control and procedure for its use, cover more than 120 defense facilities within the boundaries of responsibility.

More than 1,200 servicemen and specialists of civilian personnel intervene daily as part of the on-duty forces of the formation on combat duty in aerospace defense. During combat duty, air defense specialists conduct regular checks of the duty forces by flying control targets. In 2020, there were about 50 such trainings.

In addition, combat crews regularly conduct trainings to detect and intercept conditional air targets that simulate aerodynamic and high-precision targets in the entire range of altitudes and speeds. At the same time, special attention is paid to modeling real combat conditions with the use of the entire spectrum of aerospace attack weapons by a conventional enemy.

The high intensity of combat duty is associated, first of all, with an increase in the intensity of air traffic within the responsibility of the 1st Air Defense and Missile Defense Army. Every day, the air defense forces on duty carry out radar detection and tracking of up to 300 aircraft, 10% of which are subject to continuous radar control with the issuance of information to the Aerospace Forces Control Center. During 2020, during combat duty in the air defense of Moscow and the Central Industrial Region, the duty forces found and supported more than 120 thousand aircraft, and the duty crews of fighter aircraft took to the air more than 200 times.

The armament of the air defense formations of the Aerospace Forces, which are on alert for the air defense of Moscow and the Central Industrial Region, are equipped with modern anti-aircraft missile systems S-400 “Triumph”,
S-300 “Favorite”, anti-aircraft missile cannon systems “Pantsir-S”. They are capable of withstanding any modern means of aerospace attack at all flight altitudes, including cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The radio-technical troops are equipped with radar systems and radar stations “Sky-M”, “Podlet-K1”, “VVO” (“All-Altitude Detector”), “Observer”, “Casta” and other modern means of radar control of the airspace. The latest radar and combat and standby radars are capable of detecting airborne objects at a distance of up to 300 km and an upper boundary height of more than 50 km.

Training of highly professional officers for military air defense formations is carried out by military educational institutions – the Tver Military Academy of Aerospace Defense named after Marshal of the Soviet Union G.K. Zhukov and its training centers for anti-aircraft missile and radio-technical troops in Gatchina and Vladimir, as well as the Yaroslavl Higher Military Air Defense School.
