For several decades, April 17 was celebrated as the Day of the Soviet Fire Department. It was on this day in 1918 that the Decree of the Council of People’s Commissars “On the organization of state measures to combat fire” was signed. Among other things, the document established the Fire Council and assigned the title of the position of the chairman of the council – the chief commissioner for insurance and fire fighting.

The decree not only played a huge role in the formation and development of the fire department, but also became the beginning of the creation of the state fire service.

Over the decades of Soviet power, the fire service has come a long way. The Fire Council has grown into a highly organized structure, consisting of real professionals, equipped with a modern scientific and technical base.

Since 1999, Russian firefighters have been celebrating their professional holiday on April 30. On this day, in 1649, the first document dedicated to the fight against fire appeared – Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich signed a decree on the creation of the first Russian fire-fighting service “Order of the Gradsky Deanery”.

April 17 remains an important date for veterans of the fire department. On this day, they remember the years of service and honor the memory of their colleagues.
