After the completion of the first and second stages of the joint complex expedition of the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society (RGO) called “Remember the War”, the multifunctional logistic support ship “Elbrus”, the icebreaker “Ilya Muromets” of the auxiliary fleet and the hydrographic vessel “Romuald” Muklevich “.

The ships fully completed the planned and associated tasks for the oceanographic study of the Barents Sea in the interests of general navigation. In the course of the research, more than 4 thousand km of the bottom topography were surveyed using the route measurement method. In addition, the multifunctional logistic support vessel “Elbrus” carried out an instrumental assessment of the bottom relief, according to the results of which it was confirmed that a submarine of the “K” type (cruising submarine of the XIV series) or “Katyusha” was located within the German minefield “Bantos-A”

During the examination of the bottom, it was found that the hull of the boat was destroyed into three parts, while it was heavily entangled in fishing nets. Based on a visual examination, it can be concluded that the alleged cause of her death was an explosion on a German mine with the subsequent detonation of her own ammunition.

Due to the large number of networks, the classification was carried out according to individual elements not covered by them, in particular, a radio communication antenna, scuppers on the body, as well as characteristic internal devices (high pressure cylinders, ventilation shaft pipelines, etc.), as well as dimensions of the body. Judging by the raised anti-aircraft periscope, the boat was at periscope depth.

The identification of the submarine will continue. It is planned to establish its tactical number.

In addition, according to recently obtained data from the fishermen of the Murmansk Trawl Fleet, a sunken vessel was found, which caused numerous trawl breaks. Information about him is marked on the state nautical navigational charts. This will serve as a warning to those involved in fishing in the area.

The icebreaker “Ilya Muromets” in the central part of the Barents Sea, as a result of an instrumental assessment of the bottom topography, refined the data on the location and dimensions of the sunken ship, which is of interest for further study.

The hydrographic vessel “Romuald Muklevich” performed a search for the submarines of the Northern Fleet M-122 and M-175 that were killed during the Great Patriotic War. In the given areas, another wreck was discovered, not shown on the maps, but it was not possible to establish the locations of both “Babies” so far.

Based on the results of the post-voyage analysis of the M-175 search, taking into account the additional study of domestic and German reports to the ships participating in the Complex Expedition, a new research area will be assigned in the future. If the submarine cannot be found there, the search for it in the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation will be completed.

After processing, all received work materials will be transferred to specialized institutions to replenish state oceanographic information banks.
