Servicemen of the army corps of the Eastern Military District (VVO) on Sakhalin took part in the opening ceremony of the All-Russian action “Memory Watch”.
For the first time in the history of the action, the start of the search for the remains of soldiers killed in the Great Patriotic War was given on Sakhalin. More than 250 search engines from different cities of the country came to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk especially for this.
The ceremony began with the laying of wreaths by the servicemen of the guard of honor of the army corps of the Air Defense Forces at the Eternal Flame on the Glory Square of the regional center. After a minute of silence, veterans, activists, youth soldiers, government representatives and townspeople paid tribute to the memory of the fallen soldiers by presenting red carnations to the memorial. The sound accompaniment of the event was provided by the servicemen of the brass band of the Yuzhno-Sakhalin garrison.
After the solemn opening of the all-Russian action “Memory Watch” in the building of the government of the Sakhalin region, personal belongings and a medallion of the Red Army soldier Philip Mishkarudny were handed over to his great-granddaughter Anastasia Khodina. He has been reported missing since June 1942. During search operations in a forest clearing near the village of Davydovo in the Novgorod region, the search engines found the remains of the missing person.
In a few days, members of the Russian search movement and activists will go on numerous expeditions to search for the remains of the dead Red Army soldiers throughout the country.
Thanks to the warm weather, this year on the territory of the Sakhalin Region field work will be the first in Russia, and in the coming days an interregional expedition “Far Eastern Front” will take place, in which more than 40 people from 10-12 regions of the country will take part. In July, we hope to get to the Shumshu island. In addition to the Smirnykhovsky region and the Northern Kuriles (in these places the most fierce battles were fought in 1945), we will continue to work on the project to perpetuate the memory of military pilots “Eternal Flight” – said the head of the regional branch of the All-Russian movement Artem Bandura.
