The crews of the MiG-31BM high-altitude fighters of the separate mixed aviation regiment of the Troops and Forces in the North-East of Russia, as part of the control check during the winter training period, conducted a tactical flight exercise (LTU) over the Pacific Ocean, during which they worked out the techniques of conducting air combat, interception and defeat air targets, as well as avoiding the attack of fighters of a conventional enemy.

According to the LTU plan, the pilots improved tactical techniques for conducting close air combat, maneuvering elements with large pitch and roll angles, and also launched air-to-air missiles at air targets simulating enemy aircraft. Particular attention was paid to the technique of piloting with the use of offensive and defensive maneuvers at different heights. Tactical techniques were carried out at high, low and extremely low altitudes.

A feature of the exercise was that the tasks of intercepting and destroying an air target were first performed by young pilots of a fighter squadron. For them, LTU was the final stage of preparation for air defense alert duty in the Pacific Fleet’s area of responsibility.
