On January 8, 1841 “I became a midshipman of the fleet,” so Alexei Petrovich proudly recalled his officer years. The successful officer and talented artist served for 13 years in Kronstadt, Revel and Sveaborg, sailed on various ships, and at the same time constantly engaged in painting. As a result of long deliberations, Bogolyubov chose the path of an artist and on November 18, 1853, he retired with the rank of titular adviser, after which he was ranked among the General Naval Staff with the rank of artist.

From 1853 to 1896, for the Naval Ministry, he became a kind of historian of the Russian fleet. By order of the emperors Nicholas I, Alexander II and Alexander III, Bogolyubov painted about a hundred battle paintings covering the history of the Russian fleet from its foundation under Peter the Great to the visit of the Russian squadron to Toulon in 1893.
