The most common names for boys are Alexander, Maxim and Mikhail, for girls – Anna, Sofia and Maria.

The Moscow Civil Registry Office told what names were most often given to newborns in the first three months of this year. The most popular were Alexander and Anna.

“The preferences of Muscovites in choosing names for their babies have remained practically unchanged since 2019. And even in 1961, the name Alexander, the most popular today, was one of the most common. It is interesting to note that at that time many parents, inspired by the feat of Yuri Gagarin, called their sons the name Yuri, it was the fourth most popular, ”the ministry’s press service said.

Despite the fact that the name Alexander remained the most popular among men, compared to 2020, it began to be given 10 percent less often. For the first quarter of 2021, 619 boys were named with this name.

The top five male names also included Maxim (595), Mikhail (593), Mark (429) and Artem (426). The most common names for newborn girls are Anna (589), Sofia (562), Maria (529), and Alice (469).

Popularity is also returning to some forgotten names. For example, boys are increasingly called Yaroslav (163), Gordey (31), Seraphim (17), Luka (56), Savva (35), and girls – Yesenia (94) and Zlata (65). Compared to 2020, parents began to more often give newborn boys the names Mark (375), Timofey (296) and Arseny (151), girls – Eva (353), Mia (100) and Adeline (83).

The names Anatoly, Anton, Arkady, Arkhip, Boris, Valentin and Valery are becoming less popular. Little Muscovites are less often called Alevtins, Anfisa, Valentin, Zoya, Larissa, Lydia, Lyudmila, Natalya, Svetlana and Tamara.

Among the unusual names among the parents of newborn girls, Stephanie, Thea, Evangeline, Amalia, Ariana are popular, while the parents of boys are Christopher, Ademar and Robert.

Among the female names, there are double names: Maria-Louise, Elianna-Grace, Sophia-Elena, Venus-Veronica. This trend is not popular among parents of boys.

Register the birth of a child and you can draw up documents in the centers of public services. Specialists help parents get the document right at the hospital. You can apply for a birth certificate at any center of public services, the state fee is not charged.

The parents will receive the first document of the child on the day of application. When submitting an application at the hospital, the certificate will be brought the next day. It has become easier to restore lost or damaged documents of the registry office – from January 1 of this year, you can obtain a repeated birth certificate of a child in any department of the registry office, and not only in the one where the first copy of the document is stored.

Information about the most popular female and male names are on the open data portal Moscow government.
