Since last spring, 20,000 people have donated plasma with antibodies to COVID-19.

April 20 is the National Donor Day. More than 85 thousand people donated blood in Moscow in 2020, and 83 thousand of them donated blood. For the first time, more than 31 thousand people became donors last year. In total, the doctors received over 175 thousand donations.

The clinics received 30 thousand liters of fresh frozen plasma.

“National Donor Day is a holiday that is primarily intended to remind of the importance of donation. Only donors can help some patients and even sometimes save their lives. On this day, I would like to express my gratitude not only to donors, but also to doctors who carry out blood sampling and organize work at transfusion stations. You are helping to maintain a stable supply of high-quality donated blood components to medical organizations in Moscow, ”said Olga Mayorova, chief physician of the O.K. Gavrilov.

Since last April, patients who have recovered from COVID-19 can donate plasma – it is transfused to seriously ill patients. Since the spring of 2020, 20 thousand Muscovites have become donors. The city has harvested more than 13 tons of plasma.

The capital’s blood service includes two divisions of the O.K. Gavrilov and 13 transfusion stations at multidisciplinary medical organizations. They harvest over 160,000 liters of whole blood annually. About 200 liters are dispensed to medical institutions every day.

“Botkin Hospital is the largest consumer of donor blood components used in the treatment of patients. About nine tons of blood components are transfused annually. Most often, our doctors use transfusion therapy to treat patients with oncohematological diseases and in the department of anesthesiology and resuscitation, ”said Vladimir Bedin, deputy chief physician for surgery at the city clinical hospital named after S.P. Botkin.
