In accordance with the instructions of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, on the intensification of military-historical and military-patriotic work in the Navy, military sailors and cadets of naval educational institutions in St. Petersburg on April 23, 2021 at the Presidential Library will take part in the premiere of the film “With a prayer for the fallen.” The film, filmed by the Presidential Library’s film crew, tells about the memorial church of the holy martyrs Adrian and Natalia, which is dedicated to those who died and disappeared during the defense of Leningrad from the German invaders. The film will be broadcasted on the Presidential Library portal, to which the Main Command of the Navy, units and formations of the Navy, as well as naval educational institutions have access.
In August 1942, the Nazis were preparing a new assault on Leningrad. Armies were transferred from the south to strengthen the enemy’s positions. But our troops put up powerful resistance. From July 20 to August 2, 1942, the command of the Leningrad Front developed and carried out the Staropanov operation in the Uritsk area.
The liberation of the village of Staro-Panovo became possible only in January 1944. From 15 to 18 January 1944, our troops made 9 attempts at this line. And they were all unsuccessful. Only on the tenth attempt, at the cost of colossal losses, it was possible to break through the enemy’s line of defense and go on the offensive. By this time, not a single whole house remained here. Among other things, the church of the patrons of the Christian marriage, the holy martyrs Adrian and Natalia, built in the 19th century, was destroyed.
The question of the construction of the temple and the revival of the church was raised by a local resident Antonina Osipova, a 15-year-old girl taken to Germany. When she returned to her native places, she had an idea to restore the temple, of which she had once been a parishioner as a child. This dream has come true. And although the revived church is not an architectural repetition of the destroyed one, it took on the name of the former church of the holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalia.
One of the important aspects of the parish’s activities is the preservation of a vivid memory of the defenders of the city, in the church they collect information about the dead and missing on the Leningrad front: photographs, documents, letters, memories of relatives. Irina Minina, curator of the museum of military glory “DOT”, which operates at the temple, tells about these unique finds in the film.
The film also touches on the moral aspects. Thus, the rector of the church, Archpriest Mikhail Strelnikov, expresses his opinion: what is the meaning of losses and why do terrible wars occur?
– When we remember heavy bloody battles, a huge number of victims, we should not just reflect on what cost we got the victory, but why did it happen? There is such a concept in Christianity – the permission of God. This is a situation when God allows evil to be done in order for it to stop. And it can be stopped by a person with the assistance of God. God’s allowance is that the Creator does not directly interfere in the course of the war, but at the same time the providence of God contributes to the fact that the victory is won by life, reason, and not madness. The victory is won by those on whose side the Lord really is.
… The Church of the Holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalia is two-story. On the ground floor there is a military church of All Saints. The fallen soldiers fulfilled the commandment of God: there is no more love than to lay down their lives for their friends, for their people and their future.
And on the second floor there is the Church of the Holy Martyrs Adrian and Natalia, the patrons of matrimony. This is a very important point that is emphasized in the picture: the church in honor of the patrons of the marriage is located above the military temple, that is, the life that a marriage gives, in which children are born, is higher than death.
Around the temple there is a Park of Military Glory, where local residents together with the rector of the temple plant trees. 75 pines were planted in honor of the anniversary of the Great Victory, because the pine tree has been considered a symbol of longevity and moral purity since ancient times.
