Mikhail Myasnikovich, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission, spoke about the priorities of the Eurasian Economic Union in the field of international cooperation, as well as promising areas of work on April 21 during a lecture for students of the Higher Diplomatic Courses of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow.
The Head of the EEC Board elaborated on how the EAEU coped with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, what decisions have already been made in the interests of citizens and business.
According to Mikhail Myasnikovich, the key event of 2020 in the EAEU is the approval by the heads of state on December 11 of the Strategic Directions for the Development of Eurasian Economic Integration until 2025. “The adoption of the Strategy embodies the transition from the stage of formation to the stage of project integration. The document formulates the contours of economic interaction in new areas – education, healthcare, tourism and sports. A separate direction is the formation of the Union as one of the most significant development centers of the modern world ”, – emphasized the Chairman of the EEC Board.
The Chairman of the EEC Board paid great attention to the international cooperation of the EAEU. To date, three countries have observer status at the Union: Moldova (since 2018), Uzbekistan and Cuba (since 2020). Three trade agreements of the EAEU with third countries are in force: the Free Trade Agreement with Vietnam, the Interim Agreement leading to the formation of a free trade zone with Iran, and the Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation with the PRC. Free trade agreements signed with Serbia and Singapore. Negotiations with Israel, Egypt and India are in active phase today.
“Foreign trade policy is a real instrument for the international advancement of the Union. Without the liberalization of trade regimes, it is impossible to achieve the Union’s goal of increasing the competitiveness of national economies in a global economy, ”said Mikhail Myasnikovich.
The EEC has signed memorandums of cooperation with such associations as ASEAN, MERCOSUR and the African Union, and a technical dialogue is developing between the EAEU and the European Union. The Commission sees good prospects for building cooperation with the Comprehensive Regional Economic Partnership, the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, where it is necessary to move on to the implementation of interstate projects. Special attention is paid to integrated approaches to the implementation of the idea of the Greater Eurasian Partnership.
Mikhail Myasnikovich also answered questions from the audience about the prospects for interaction between the EAEU and third countries.
Students of the Higher Diplomatic Courses of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs are diplomats sent to work as ambassadors, permanent representatives, envoy advisors, deputy permanent representatives and consuls general.
