The 5G demo center is the first city laboratory in Russia to test innovative solutions using new generation communications. Here Russian companies can test their developments before bringing them to the market. Developers comprehensively test both software and devices designed to work with new generation networks.
The 5G demo center, located in the Smart City exhibition pavilion at VDNKh, has begun testing innovative solutions with a new generation of communication technology. The site is testing the effectiveness of four developments. These include a digital platform for working with BIM projects in construction, an aircraft monitoring system and wireless optical communications for 5G networks.
Tests of high-tech developments in the demo center are carried out as part of the pilot innovation testing program, which is operated by the Moscow Innovation Agency, subordinate to the Moscow Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development… The program was launched in 2019. Thanks to it, startups and established knowledge-intensive companies have the opportunity to test their products at city or commercial sites.
This allows entrepreneurs to assess the competitiveness and prospects of developments, improve them before launching to the market, thanks to feedback from consumers. And the organizations on the basis of which the tests are passed are the first to get acquainted with promising technologies.
“A total of 113 sites participate in the innovation testing program, where it is possible to test IT developments. Since 2019, 20 telecommunications and IT companies have tested their solutions, ”said the head of the Moscow Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development
The 5G demo center at VDNKh was equipped with the latest equipment that allows you to create and test high-tech devices and services.
“This is the first urban laboratory in Russia to test innovative solutions based on 5G technology that can make the city more convenient. The 5G demo center has created effective and flexible conditions for testing real products based on fifth-generation networks, ”said Deputy Head Department of Information Technology Alexander Gorbatko.
Several developments of Russian companies began to be tested on the site. Thus, the new digital platform will help implement BIM projects right on the construction site in real time. It can be used to visualize 3D models of buildings, parks and roads using augmented and mixed reality technologies.
Now it is not possible to use BIM technologies on construction sites using a tablet. You need to connect a powerful computing unit to a portable gadget with a 3D camera, and only stationary computers have it. You only need to connect via HDMI and USB cables. This deprives the user of mobility. But the power of 5G networks makes it possible to connect the tablet to the computing server wirelessly. This means that BIM technologies can be applied on the road, when visiting construction sites.
And the developer of the aircraft monitoring system is testing unmanned aerial vehicles that work on the basis of artificial intelligence and computer vision algorithms. Specialized software is tested, as well as technical devices – a drone and a remote control. The demo center launches a drone and tests its control efficiency using 5G networks. In the future, it will be possible to control drones in any area with such coverage.
In addition, the demo center tests wireless optical communication for new generation networks. Such communication provides high data transfer rates with low channel latencies. The unique equipment is capable of transmitting up to 40 gigabits per second. For devices that support 5G, this figure will grow to 100 gigabits per second. Optical communication is tested by replacing the signal transmission medium: air is used instead of fiber optic cable.
Large companies, startups, research institutes and industry universities can test their devices and services in the 5G demo center. To gain access to the site’s test infrastructure, they need to present their design based on 5G technologies. The solutions should be useful in the field of transportation, medicine, security or education.

In Moscow, pilot 5G zones began to open in mid-2019. Now operators are testing a 5G network on Tverskaya Street, VDNKh, Vorobyovy Gory, the territory of the Luzhniki sports complex, in the Skolkovo innovation center and other venues. The commercial launch of 5G in Moscow is planned for 2022–2023.
Fifth generation communication technology features faster data transfer rates, faster network responsiveness, and higher network capacity. Thus, the speed of mobile Internet in 5G networks will exceed one gigabit per second. For comparison: in 4G networks currently in use, the maximum data transfer rate is 150 megabits per second.
