Photos, newspaper clippings, albums and other documents tell about the lives of people who fought for their homeland.

On April 27, 1945, the Soviet army broke through to the center of Berlin. By this date Main Archive of Moscow opened a new section in the virtual museum “Moscow – Caring for History”where published 1315 biographies of the heroes of the Soviet Union… Personal documents, photographs, newspaper clippings, albums and other testimonies tell about the lives of people who fought for their homeland.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Victory, as part of a joint project with the Moscow Department of Education and Science “Heroes of the Soviet Union – Heirs of Victory”, all these biographies were posted in the library of the “Moscow Electronic School”. Now they can also be studied in the virtual museum. All materials of the project “Heroes of the Soviet Union – the Heirs of Victory” can be used both by teachers in the classroom and by schoolchildren engaged in research work. Also, the project may be of interest to everyone who is simply fond of history.

In addition to the biographies of the heroes, in the museum you can now get acquainted with photo album “Generation of Winners”, which depicts representatives of the military generation who went through the hardships of war, demobilized, studied, raised industry and agriculture from the ruins, built new cities, were teachers, mentors of youth, authors of music, books, filmmakers. Photos can be seen not only in the virtual museum, but also at the street exhibition near the Glavarkhiv building at 82 Profsoyuznaya Street, Building 1.


The archival photographs also show touching moments of meetings of fellow soldiers in the park near the Bolshoi Theater, in Gorky Park, on Poklonnaya Hill. There are also photographs of the triumphant military Victory parades with the participation of veterans.

The photo album and the exhibition near the building of the Main Archive presents the works of masters of Russian photography: Viktor Akhlomov, Boris Yaroslavtsev, Alexander Stanovov, Vasily Malyshev, Mikhail Trakhman, Georgy Korabelnikov, Boris Ignatovich, Anatoly Egorov, Vasily Egorov, Anatoly Morozov.

The street exhibition at the Glavarkhiv building will run from April 27 to June 27. Photos can be viewed from 09:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and from 11:00 to 20:00 on weekends. Free admission.

More awards were awarded for the storming of Berlin than for all other operations of the Great Patriotic War. The medal “For the capture of Berlin” was awarded to over one million people, more than 600 participants received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. The Berlin offensive is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest battle in history: it lasted 23 days, and on both sides it was attended by about 3.5 million people.
