The modern doctrine of military field surgery is based on the vast experience of treating the wounded and injured in wars and military conflicts at the turn of the XX-XXI centuries (Afghanistan, Chechnya, Dagestan, Serbia, Abkhazia, Georgia, Syria), terrorist acts (Beslan), as well as disasters (earthquake in Armenia, Indonesia, etc.).
At the turn of the millennium (from 1998 to 2017), the head of the surgical service of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation was Major General of the Medical Service, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Nikolai Alekseevich Efimenko. Over the past decades, with his participation, many cardinal problems of organizing assistance to the wounded and injured have been solved.
