Today, one of the most famous and combat-ready formations of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the 7th Guards Airborne Assault Red Banner Orders of Suvorov and Kutuzov (mountain) division, celebrates its 76th anniversary of formation.

The formation was formed on the basis of the 322nd Guards Parachute Order of Kutuzov Regiment of the 8th Guards Airborne Corps in the city of Polotsk of the Belarusian Military District. She received her baptism of fire near Lake Balaton (Hungary) in 1945 as part of the 9th Army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front.

On April 26, 1945, the unit was awarded the Order of Kutuzov II degree for exemplary performance of the command assignments at the front, 6 commendations from the Supreme Commander were announced to it, 2065 soldiers, sergeants and officers were awarded orders and medals of the USSR for battles. On October 14, 1948, the division was redeployed to the cities of Kaunas and Marijampole in the Lithuanian SSR. In 1956, the unit took part in the Hungarian events, and in 1968 – in the Czechoslovak ones.

The divisions of the division were the first in the Airborne Forces (Airborne Forces) to master the performance of parachute jumps from the AN-8, AN-12, AN-22, IL-76 aircraft, and tested a number of new D-5, D-6 parachute systems. For the first time, the personnel of the division performed a practical landing after a flight at altitudes of 6-8 thousand meters using oxygen devices.

The unit’s paratroopers were repeatedly involved in such major exercises and maneuvers as Shield-76, Neman, Zapad-81, Zapad-84, Dozor-86, etc. exercises “West-81” division was awarded the Pennant of the Minister of Defense of the USSR “For courage and military valor.” During the last three exercises, the airborne assault vehicles were dropped together with the crews.

On May 4, 1985, the division was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for successes in combat and political training and in connection with the 40th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

In the period from 1979 to 1989. the overwhelming majority of officers and warrant officers of the division honorably performed their international duty in the Republic of Afghanistan. Many of them have received state awards.

Since August 1993, the division has been deployed on the territory of the Southern (North Caucasian) Military District, in the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, and since 2017, individual units of the formation have been deployed in the Republic of Crimea.

In 1993-1996. military units and subdivisions of the 7th Guards. Airborne divisions carried out peacekeeping tasks in Abkhazia.

From January 1995 to April 2004, a separate combined paratrooper battalion of the division with reinforcements carried out tasks to establish constitutional order on the territory of the Chechen Republic.

From February 1998 to September 1999, the military maneuvering group (VMG) of the 7th Airborne Division carried out tasks to combat terrorists in the Botlikh region of the river. Dagestan. In August 1999, the personnel of the VMG of the 7th Airborne Division was the first to take on the attack of the Chechen militants who invaded the Botlikh region.

From 1999 to April 2004, the personnel of the division took an active part in the counter-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus.

More than 2,500 paratroopers of the division were awarded for their courage and heroism in performing combat missions during the counter-terrorist operation.

In August 2008, the unit’s paratroopers took part in the operation to force Georgia to peace.

In 2012, the division, in cooperation with units of the Southern Military District and federal power structures, took part in a counter-terrorist operation in the mountainous part of the Republic of Dagestan.

By the decree of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation No. 201 of 20.04.2015, the division was awarded the Order of Suvorov.

May 14, 2015 Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation General of the Army Sergei Shoigu for merits and exemplary service by the Fatherland to the Order of Suvorov. The division at that time became the fifth owner of the Order of Suvorov in the modern history of Russia.

Due to the special geographical location of the unit, the Airborne Forces Command pays special attention to the training and preparation of the personnel of the airborne assault mountain unit.

At present, the compound is equipped with the most modern types of weapons, military and special equipment, landing and communications equipment. This year, the formation received a battalion set of BMD-4M and BTR-MDM Rakushka airborne assault vehicles.

During its glorious history, the division has trained 10 Heroes of the Soviet Union and 18 Heroes of Russia. More than 46,000 servicemen have been awarded orders and medals.

The unit is commanded by Major General Andrei Sukhovetsky, who began his officer service as the commander of an airborne platoon in the renowned unit.
