Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak held videoconference talks with the Secretary General, Executive Director of the World Energy Council (WEC) Angela Wilkinson.

The main topic of the meeting was the organization of the 25th World Energy Congress, scheduled to be held in St. Petersburg from 24 to 27 October 2022. During the meeting, Alexander Novak discussed with the head of WECA a number of organizational issues in preparation for the congress.

The event planned in Russia is a significant event not only for the Russian, but also for the world energy sector. As the Deputy Prime Minister recalled, in 2022 WEC will celebrate its 100th anniversary, the congress will become an anniversary one, while the event will be held in Russia for the first time since 1968.

“Russia, together with a number of other countries, stood at the origins of the establishment of WEC and today continues to attach invariably great importance to interaction with this authoritative organization. We received the right to hold the congress following the voting results of more than 90 countries participating in the WEC, and now we set an ambitious task – to organize the largest congress in history, which will bring together the heads of a number of states. We expect that the number of participants in the event will be comparable to the previous ones and even higher, ”noted Alexander Novak.

During the conversation, the Deputy Prime Minister dwelled on organizational innovations in terms of preparations for the congress. As the Deputy Prime Minister noted, the composition of the organizing committee has recently been updated, which includes a number of heads of federal executive authorities, heads of the largest energy companies in Russia, 12 working groups have been formed in various areas of activity, and a new head of the Russian National Committee for WECs has been appointed. “Meetings of the organizing committee will be held once a quarter, the second meeting of the organizing committee took place in early April, at which the progress of the preparation work was discussed and appropriate instructions were given. An invitation campaign to the congress, registration of participants has already started; by the end of the month we plan to send proposals to the WECC secretariat on moderators and speakers that meet WEC standards, ”said Alexander Novak.
