Leonid Roshal was born in 1933 in the town of Livny, Oryol region.
In 1957 he graduated from the medical faculty of the Second Moscow State Medical Institute (now the Russian National Research Medical University named after NI Pirogov) with a degree in pediatrics. Then he started working as a children’s district doctor.
In 1959 he entered the residency at the Department of Pediatric Surgery of the Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians.
In 1962, he began working at the Moscow Regional Research Clinical Institute in the Department of Pediatric Surgery as a junior researcher. In 1965, he was promoted to Senior Research Fellow. In this institution, Leonid Roshal worked for 20 years, having organized a center for newborn surgery at the hospital.
In 1970 he received a doctorate in medical sciences, at the same time he became the chief freelance pediatric pulmonologist of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region.
In 1982, Leonid Roshal received the title of professor and was elected head of the department of urgent surgery of the Scientific Research Institute of Pediatrics of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. In 2003, he became director of the Moscow Research Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery and Traumatology, and since 2015 – President of the Research Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery and Traumatology.
Leonid Roshal founded a scientific school in pediatric surgery, became the author and co-author of 250 scientific works, including seven monographs. Has eight certificates for inventions.
Leonid Roshal is an expert of the World Health Organization, a member of the Executive Committee of the Union of Pediatricians of Russia, a member of the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons, co-chairman of the All-Russian Union of Public Associations “Civil Society for Children of Russia”, and also President of the International Charitable Foundation for Helping Children in Disaster and War. Leonid Roshal was the first in the world to propose the creation of mobile surgical teams to help children in hot spots. Such brigades have appeared in 33 regions of Russia.
Leonid Roshal took part in the rescue of children injured during the earthquake in Armenia. He took part in helping children of Georgia, Algeria, India, Japan, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Haiti, Bashkiria, the former Yugoslavia, unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh, the Gaza Strip and Romania, negotiated with terrorists in 2002 in Moscow and in 2004- m in Beslan.
Leonid Roshal was awarded the Order of Courage in 2002 and the Order of Merit to the Fatherland, IV degree in 2008. He was also awarded the Order of Peter the Great, 1st Class and the Order “For the Revival of Russia. XXI Century ”in 2003, the Order of the Golden Cross, the Order of Glory to Russia and the Order of Saint Righteous Juliana Lazarevskaya in 2005, the Order of Lomonosov, the Order of the Golden Star of Glory and the Order of Pride of Russia in 2006.
In 1995, journalists named Leonid Roshal the children’s doctor of the world. He was awarded the Profession – Life Prize and the Russian of the Year Grand Prix in 2004, as well as the Ludwig Nobel Prize in 2010.
