The new plant is designed to assemble up to 500 electric buses per year.
An assembly plant for KamAZ electric buses has opened in Moscow at the Sokolniki Carriage Repair and Construction Plant.
“This is a new technological level of our mechanical engineering for passenger land transport, and the world level,” noted
Sergei Sobyanin during a visit to the enterprise. “There is also a powerful R&D center in Skolkovo, in addition, 700 people work in various bus fleets in Moscow for the operation of passenger transport.”
According to the Mayor of Moscow, a lot of work has been done to launch the production of electric buses. In the summer of 2019, at the Moscow Urban Forum, the Moscow Government and KamAZ PJSC signed an Agreement on the implementation of a project to create an electric bus production in Moscow. The new equipment was placed in a branch of Mosgortrans – at the Sokolnichesky Car Repair and Construction Plant (SVARZ).
“It was necessary for our manufacturers to issue such a world-class product, create software, prepare appropriate services and maintenance. For this, 15-year contracts were signed, under which manufacturers have created very good, high-level samples of land passenger transport and continue to improve them, ”said Sergei Sobyanin.
The new production of electric buses will reduce the time for assembly, delivery, maintenance of vehicles and save on logistics. The cost of operating this type of transport will be lower.
In April 2021, the first stage of work was completed – the modernization of SVARZ production facilities with an area of seven thousand square meters. The specialists replaced the roof, glass, floors, lighting and ventilation systems, heating and water supply, equipped warehouses for components and special equipment, as well as an administrative building with showers, changing rooms and rest rooms for employees.
“We have fulfilled all the points of our Agreement signed three years ago. It was very interesting for us to work, because together with Moscow we created the sample of the terms of reference for product development, which generally meets the highest world requirements. We got down to work with interest and are proud of what we have managed to do ”, – noted the General Director of KamAZ PJSC Sergey Kogogin.
The created production facilities are designed to assemble up to 500 electric buses per year. In Moscow, about 20 assembly operations will be carried out – from the installation of doors and interior trim to equipping with software that controls the components and assemblies of the electric bus.
The production has created 100 high-tech jobs. Investments in the project amounted to 325 million rubles. Tax payments to the city budget will amount to about 60 million rubles a year.
At present, test assembly, testing and running-in of electric buses are being carried out on the territory of SVARZ. Eleven vehicles have already been assembled, of which five have been fully tested.
It is expected that the first electric bus assembled in Moscow will enter the route in May 2021.
“Now KamAZ is developing a new line of passenger transport, including electric buses. And the first one to whom we proposed design solutions and technical solutions was, of course, the Moscow Department of Transport, so that it can familiarize itself with what we want to do in advance and be able to make adjustments that the city needs, ”added Sergey Kogogin.
At the second stage of production development, it is planned to reconstruct another workshop with an area of three thousand square meters by 2023. This will make it possible to produce about 200 more electric buses annually.
Localization of electric bus production in Moscow will reach 40 percent. At the same time, the most expensive and high-tech operations will be carried out at SVARZ.
About the Moscow electric bus
The first electric buses took to the streets of the city in the fall of 2018. Under the terms of the contracts, in 2018–2021, domestic manufacturers GAZ and KamAZ delivered 600 electric buses to Moscow.
According to Sergei Sobyanin, a large program is underway to replace the passenger bus fleet with an electric bus fleet in Moscow.
“Today, Moscow’s electric bus fleet is the largest in Europe. And we will increase our volumes every year. We have practically stopped purchasing buses with diesel fuel and motor fuel and are completely starting to switch to electric buses. Today there are 600 of them, and every year large enough volumes will be bought in order to gradually replace the entire bus fleet (or at least a large part) with an electric bus one, ”he stressed.
This type of transport already serves 45 routes. Since the beginning of their work, they have carried 85 million passengers and covered over 37 million kilometers on the roads of Moscow.
By the end of 2021, 400 electric buses are expected to be delivered. About 60 percent of them are assembled in Moscow. The plans for the coming years are to increase the fleet of electric buses to 2,200 cars. This will make up almost a third of the capital’s land transport fleet.
Thus, taking into account trams, about 40 percent of Moscow’s ground transport will switch to electric traction. And by 2030, the entire Mosgortrans park should become green, that is, environmentally friendly.
The Moscow electric bus can accommodate 85 passengers. It has at least 33 seats. For passengers with limited mobility, there is a low floor level, ramps and places for visually impaired people with guide dogs.
The Moscow electric bus is an environmentally friendly form of transport. Replacing one diesel bus with an electric bus reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 60.5 tons per year.
This type of transport also provides climate control, USB connectors for charging mobile devices and media screens.
Electric buses replenish their energy reserves within 6-10 minutes using ultra-fast charging stations at the final stops. There are more than 100 such points in Moscow. The power reserve is 40-50 kilometers.
With the operation and suggestions of passengers, improvements are constantly being made to the design of electric buses. In 2020, Moscow purchased the third generation of electric buses, in which, compared to previous versions:
– separate climate control is provided for the driver and passengers;
– the thermal curtains of doors and side windows have been modernized;
– the floor covering was replaced with a more wear-resistant one, the pattern imitates a parquet board;
– soft panels are installed in the center of the cabin, on which passengers can lean on their elbows when riding while standing;
– a system of automated passenger counting has been installed;
– all-round cameras appeared;
– installed speakers to inform visually impaired passengers about the direction of travel;
– equipped with a multimedia electric bus control system – the driver can control the operation of the car directly from the tablet on the dashboard. In online mode, data is transmitted to the servers of Mosgortrans and the manufacturer.
Electric buses have proven their efficiency and reliability. Last winter, during severe frosts and snowfalls, not a single failure occurred due to weather conditions.
The technical readiness factor of electric buses is 0.97–0.98. This makes this type of wheeled ground transport the most reliable in Moscow. But at the same time, it is 30 percent cheaper than models from other manufacturers, for example, Polish and German.
The use of electric buses allows to reduce operating costs, simplify the maintenance of rolling stock (the service life is 15 years under the terms of a service contract), reduce the level of harmful emissions, reduce the level of noise and vibration in the cabin by 30 percent compared to buses.
Under service contracts, Russian manufacturers are responsible for the full functionality of rolling stock and charging stations for 15 years of their operation. In addition, suppliers assume the risks and costs of ensuring the reliability and uptime of all electric bus systems.
Transport experts highly appreciated the launch of electric buses in Moscow. Innovative transport won the national award “Formula of Movement – 2018” in the category “The best solution in the field of passenger transport”. The Moscow electric bus also received the national award “Car of the Year in Russia – 2019”.
