The Union for the Conservation of Birds of Russia has chosen the fawn, a predatory representative of the falcon genus, as a symbol of 2021. The exhibition is dedicated to this bird“Thunderstorm of insects”in the Biological Museum named after K.A. Timiryazev.

The exposition includes exhibits from the museum’s funds, illustrating the features and habits of the male fawn.

Outwardly, the falcon looks like a falcon, but smaller. Males can be recognized by their dark gray color and reddish-brown “pants”. Females look different: they have a gray back and a red “cap”. Young birds have a brownish-gray color with white feathers below, on the head – a black “mask” and “mustache”.

Kobchik lives in forest and forest-steppe zones from Eastern Europe to Eastern Siberia, feeds on large insects, small birds and rodents. For nesting, this bird chooses small forests, copses, forest belts. In winter, she flies to warm lands.

Kobchik is listed in the Red Book of Russia.
