More than nine million times metro passengers in March paid their fare with bank cards at the turnstile. This is the highest figure in the entire history of the Moscow metro.
In March 2021, at metro turnstiles, passengers paid for travel with bank cards 9.28 million times. For comparison: in March 2020, passengers used contactless payments at turnstiles 4.98 million times – almost two times less.
In total, in the first quarter of 2021, travel at turnstiles was paid 22.40 million times. This is 39 percent more than in the same period in 2020. Then, with the help of bank cards, passengers passed through the turnstiles in the metro 16.09 million times.
“The increase in the number of contactless payments is more relevant today than ever. Moscow is one of the few cities in the world that offers so many contactless payment methods for public transport. Today the Moscow ticketing system is one of the most developed in the world. Passengers can pay for travel by bank cards “Mir”, MasterCard, Visa or using payment services UnionPay, MirPay, Samsung Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Huawei Pay, Alipay.
For the first time, additional equipment for payment of travel by bank cards at the turnstile was installed in September 2015 at the Kotelniki metro station. Since then, contactless payment turnstiles have appeared at all stations. Now there are 893 of them in the metro, at least two turnstiles at each station.
The metro also has 1,650 ticket machines and 150 cashless terminals. Troika owners can buy tickets and fully manage the transport card remotely without going to the box office using the Moscow Metro application.
