The development of cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union and the Republic of Colombia was discussed by the Minister for Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasian Economic Commission Sergey Glazyev and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Colombia to the Russian Federation Lopez Alfonso Caballero. The meeting took place on April 27 at the EEC headquarters.
The parties discussed the development of cooperation in a broader context – within the framework of the EEC’s interaction with the Pacific Alliance and the Andean Community, of which Colombia is a member.
“The Pacific Alliance is one of the most dynamically developing integration associations in Latin America, which this year celebrates an anniversary – a decade since its inception. To expand the agenda of our cooperation, we propose to organize a separate event “EAEU – Pacific Alliance”. It could become a permanent platform for discussing not only the current state of development of the EAEU and the Pacific Alliance, but also modern global geo-economic problems, ”said Serey Glazyev.
The Ambassador of Colombia, in turn, welcomed the initiative to hold such an event and said that the Presidency of the Pacific Alliance in 2021, Colombia will do its utmost to help organize such a forum on a wide range of issues.
Gohar Barseghyan, Director of the EEC Integration Development Department, invited representatives of Colombia to take part in key forums and conferences held in the EAEU countries – the Eurasian Forum and the Astana Economic Forum. In addition, she suggested thinking about organizing a separate event dedicated to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at the regional level, as well as assessing the contribution of integration activities within the EAEU and The Pacific Alliance to achieve these goals.
The parties agreed to maintain regular working contacts for the operational “synchronization of watches”.
In 2015, the Eurasian Economic Commission signed memorandums of understanding with Chile and Peru, in 2018 – with Cuba, which was granted observer state status at the EAEU on December 11, 2020.
The Commission has not established official bilateral relations with the Republic of Colombia, cooperation is developing within the framework of the EEC’s interaction with the Andean Community (the Memorandum of Understanding between the EEC and the General Secretariat of the Andean Community was signed on March 23, 2017 during the visit of the EEC delegation to Lima), as well as with the Pacific Alliance (The Declaration on Partnership between the EEC and the States Parties to the Framework Agreement of the Pacific Alliance was signed on July 5, 2019 in Lima during the 14th Summit of the Pacific Alliance at the level of heads of state), of which it is a member.
