Department of Physical Training of the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov is 90 years old.

On April 28, 1931, brigade doctor of the 1st rank Georgy Karlovich Birzin became the first head of the department. This date was dedicated to the interuniversity scientific and practical conference, which took place in the assembly hall of the sports complex.

However, the teaching of the discipline at the Military Medical Academy began much earlier. In 1900, on the initiative of a number of progressive professors of the academy, the Commission on Physical Exercise of Students was formed. For students, classes in gymnastics, fencing, ice skating, playing in townships, horse riding began to be held. So the introduction of physical education classes into the educational process of the academy can be carried out precisely since 1900.

During the evacuation of the academy to Samarkand in 1941, the department of physical culture and medical control over physical training and sports was abolished, and the course of medical control was transferred to the department of physiotherapy, but even in such seemingly incredible wartime conditions for research work, scientific research did not stop. Until the last day of the war, the staff of the department, headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences A.N. The Krestovnikovs treated the wounded in hospitals at the front and rear, including the method they developed for restoring the wounded by means of physical therapy.

The department has repeatedly changed its name, but one thing has remained unchanged – highly qualified specialists have worked and are working here from the day of its formation to the present.

At different periods of time, the department served military service and worked outstanding specialists: Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in athletics, champion of the 1st All-Union Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR Ivan Potanin; Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Colonel Leonid Korolev – Head of the Department since 1961; multiple champion and record holder of the USSR and the USSR Armed Forces in the 100 m race, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Colonel of the Medical Service Vasily Tsygankov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Chief Traumatologist of the USSR Ministry of Defense Major General of the Medical Service Sergei Tkachenko; honored trainer of the RSFSR and Russia, honored worker of physical culture of the Russian Federation Anatoly Rakhlin, who has worked at the department for 60 years and many others.

Since February 2020, the department is headed by Colonel Alexey Anatolyevich Maryin, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor. “At one time in sports I was very active, I was a candidate for master of sports in skiing and biathlon, I was repeatedly a medalist of the Armed Forces of the USSR, and although this is already in the past, I can say that I have not stopped participating in sports events until now.” – says Colonel Alexei Maryin, adding that in his work at the department he tries not only to carefully preserve its accumulated glorious traditions, but also to multiply them in every possible way at a new organizational and methodological level.

In October 2018, the department moved to a new sports complex, equipped in the highest class and meeting all the requirements for sports facilities of this type: multifunctional gyms with high capacity, a 25-meter swimming pool, specialized gyms, an assembly hall, a meeting room, etc. other premises of the sports complex. All this ensured that not only all types of physical training classes were held in full, but also educational and training sessions in various sports, as well as numerous competitions at various levels. In addition to the main sports base, magnificent sports facilities have been built at the academy in the training center in Krasnoe Selo, including a stadium and an indoor shooting range.

More than 20 employees work at the department, two thirds of which are military personnel. Among them there is one doctor of sciences, two professors and seven candidates of sciences with the academic title of associate professor. In addition, among the teaching staff there are nine masters of sports of Russia, four honored coaches of the USSR and Russia. Some teachers have the title of Master of Sports in two or more sports. “

A special place in the activities of the department is occupied by the preparation of military personnel for participation in the competition of the International Army Games “Military Medical Relay Race”. It received not only its development at the academy, but also wide popularity, since it is, first of all, a military-applied sport, which is especially important for cadets and students of medical training faculties. According to Alexei Maryin, the teachers of the department have accumulated vast experience in the preparation and participation of teams in major international competitions, as well as in organizing their holding, they have accumulated invaluable experience in working with foreign delegations.

On April 27, in Vladikavkaz, the next all-army stage of the “Military Medical Relay” competition ended, which is the selection of athletes for the national team of the Russian Armed Forces at the International Army Games. The team of the Military Medical Academy once again confirmed its high level, taking first place in the overall standings. Several more team members became winners in the individual championship.
