MIL OSI Translation. Region: Russian Federation –
In Damascus, it was officially announced that presidential elections will take place in Syria on May 26. We are closely monitoring their preparation. To date, several candidates, including women, have been registered for the highest government office.
We presume that the organization of the presidential election campaign in the SAR is an exclusively internal affair of this country and fully complies with the requirements of the current Constitution of 2012 and national legislation. These actions in no way contradict the provisions of UNSCR 2254 and other international decisions, which are based on respect for the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic.
In this regard, we regard the statements made the other day from the capitals of a number of foreign states about the alleged illegitimacy of the upcoming elections as an element of rude political pressure on Damascus and another attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the SAR. No one has the right to tell the Syrians when and under what conditions they should elect their head of state.
We hope that, despite the ongoing illegal foreign occupation of part of the Syrian territory, the vote will be held in accordance with existing national and international standards. Responding to the appeal of the Syrian side, we will be ready to send Russian observers to the upcoming elections in the SAR.
