Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko chaired a meeting of the Coordination Council for the preparation and holding of the UEFA European Football Championship 2020 in the Russian Federation.

The tournament will be held in 11 cities (Amsterdam, Baku, Budapest, Bucharest, Glasgow, Copenhagen, London, Munich, Rome, St. Petersburg, Seville) from June 11 to July 11, 2021.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Sports Oleg Matytsin, the heads of Rospotrebnadzor, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Education and Science, as well as Vice Governor of St. Petersburg Boris Piotrovsky, President of the Russian Football Union Alexander Dyukov and General Director of ANO UEFA Euro 2020 Alexey Sorokin.

“St. Petersburg will become one of the capitals of the European Football Championship. It will host seven matches on a par with London, the first – between Russia and Belgium – will be held on June 12. We need to quickly coordinate and hold the tournament at the highest level. This is the biggest event since the 2018 FIFA World Cup in our country. All tickets have already been sold. At the moment, the proposed stadium occupancy is up to 50% of spectators. I consider it necessary to think over how to increase the number of viewers, while ensuring all the necessary security measures, ”said Dmitry Chernyshenko.

To date, a reserve of 2300 volunteers has been formed who are ready to take part in the tournament. On April 22, their training started. In 23 constituent entities of the country, fan zones should be organized, and the government of the Northern capital should provide free travel on public transport to ticket holders for matches.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that according to the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee, three additional group stage matches have been postponed from Dublin to St. Petersburg. Thus, Russia will host six group stage matches, as well as one quarter-final match of Euro 2020. In connection with the additional matches, it is necessary to ensure that the participating teams are provided with an additional two training grounds and bring them in accordance with the requirements of UEFA. And at the main stadium, organize a special control over the preparation and operation of the football field, create a set of measures to restore or replace its coverage.
