It was awarded to citizens who, in the period from October 19, 1941 to January 25, 1942, participated in the defense of Moscow for at least one month, as well as to those who most actively from July 22, 1941 to January 25, 1942 showed themselves in the air defense and during the construction of defensive lines around the city.
Many residents of the country were awarded for their services to the Fatherland during the Great Patriotic War. But the number of these merits is so great that it became necessary to expand the state reward system. Documents about this have been preserved in the Moscow Glavarchive.
Already in May 1942, the state award system was replenished with a number of military orders, which were awarded to generals and officers of the Red Army for merits and heroism on the battlefield. These were the Order of the Patriotic War, the Order of Suvorov, the Order of Kutuzov, the Order of Alexander Nevsky and others. At the same time, medals began to appear for the rank and file and ordinary citizens who participated in the defense of the largest cities.
So, on May 1, 1944, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR established the medal “For the Defense of Moscow”, sketches for which belong to the famous artist and graphic artist Nikolai Moskalev. But she was not the first among the awards for the defense of cities. Back in 1942, the medals “For the Defense of Leningrad”, “For the Defense of Sevastopol”, “For the Defense of Stalingrad” and “For the Defense of Odessa” appeared.
The Battle of Moscow is one of the key clashes in the course of the war. It was here that the forces of the fascists were stopped and not allowed to capture the capital, and then the counter-offensive of the Soviet side began. Not only soldiers, but also civilians took part in the defense of the city. Therefore, the medal “For the Defense of Moscow” was awarded to both military personnel and civilians who participated in the defense of Moscow for at least one month from October 19, 1941 to January 25, 1942, as well as to those who were most active since July 22, 1941 Until January 25, 1942, he showed himself in the air defense business and in the construction of defensive lines around the city.
The heroism of citizens is evidenced by the number of medals “For the Defense of Moscow” awarded to more than a million people. The Main Archive published the names of more than half a million holders of this medal. A third of those who received it are children and women. You can view digital copies of the lists of Muscovites approved by the Moscow City Council in the virtual museum “Moscow – Caring for History”.
