Servicemen of the 90th separate special search battalion of the Western Military District (ZVO) completed an expedition to search for remains in a previously unexplored mass grave of civilians and soldiers of the Red Army in the Novgorod region.
During the expedition, servicemen of the battalion exhumed for subsequent identification the remains of more than 600 people in the vicinity of the village of Vditsko, Novgorod district, Novgorod region, destroyed during the war. Among the remains found 390 – servicemen of the Red Army, 209 – victims of the war from among civilians, 2 – servicemen of the Wehrmacht. To date, the remains of 14 people have already been identified. Also during the excavations, 22 soldiers’ medallions were found, the contents of which are currently being restored.
In the search season of this year, the personnel of a separate special search battalion of the Western Military District will take part in search expeditions in the Leningrad and Kaluga regions, in Karelia and the Crimea.
A separate special search battalion of the Western Military District is the only military unit within the Russian Ministry of Defense, designed exclusively for search operations on the ground and perpetuating the memory of those killed in the defense of the Fatherland.
