Dmitry Chernyshenko at a lecture for students of the Russian International Olympic University

On June 1, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko delivered a lecture on the values of leadership and team building in the preparation and holding of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The main elements of management of the Sochi-2014 megaproject formed the basis for a new approach to interdepartmental cooperation in the Government. An educational lecture – a joint project of the Knowledge Society and the Sirius educational center – was presented at the All-Russian educational marathon “New Knowledge”.

The Deputy Prime Minister delivered a lecture to the students of the Russian International Olympic University in Sochi, including participants in the Olympic Games, winners of Russian and European championships, champions and prize-winners of world Universiades, members of Olympic and Paralympic teams, international sports federations, coaches and instructors, managers and volunteers of sports events, representing 16 countries of the world. The lecture was also attended by members of the youth council under the head of the city of Sochi, the city student council and the council of high school students, the finalists of the city career guidance project “Let us steer!”, Leaders of volunteer cells of universities and colleges.

As part of the lecture “The Olympic Approach: How the Olympic Games in Sochi Influenced the New System of Public Administration” Dmitry Chernyshenko told how the Games, recognized by the International Olympic Committee as “the best games for athletes”, were created. The event marked the beginning of a completely new approach to the implementation of global projects.

The unique vision and mission of the Sochi Olympics, graphically depicted in the form of a triangle – the most stable geometric figure – have been called the “Russian diamond”. This approach to the visualization of goals and objectives has been recognized as one of the most effective and is actively used by the organizing committees of the Olympics around the world.

As Dmitry Chernyshenko noted, one of the most important tasks in the preparation of the Olympics was the formation of a team.

“70 thousand people were involved in the preparation of the Games at the final stage. They all came from completely different corporate cultures, they all needed to be united by a common mission, to create their own unique corporate culture. For this, a system of values was developed: “Act effectively. Achieve the result. Collaborate. Show respect, ”said the Deputy Prime Minister.

The main operational center, in which all key issues were resolved in real time, worked around the clock during the Games. It brought together representatives of all involved government agencies and departments on its site. More than 100 organizations took part in the preparation for the Olympiad.

“This rich experience, which we have accumulated over the seven years of preparation for the Olympics, was used in the work of the Government. The new composition of the Cabinet, determined in early 2020, began its work by defining a common mission, vision, goals and values. In a record 30 days, a Coordination Center under the Government was created – a common platform for interaction of all government agencies and departments, in which work is carried out around the clock, regardless of departmental barriers. All of these are elements of the Olympic legacy that have proven their effectiveness and viability, ”summed up Dmitry Chernyshenko’s speech.

RIOU Rector, RAO Academician Lev Belousov noted: “RIOU is a landmark project – a symbol of the Olympic heritage. The University has created and operates the Olympic Heritage Center, which includes the archive of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and the Information Resource Center, which contains about 7.5 thousand copies of printed publications.

RIOU creates the necessary conditions for research in the field of the Olympic movement and sports. Its graduates, based on the knowledge gained, are in demand in the structures of the Russian and world Olympic and Paralympic movements.

The experience of holding such large-scale sports events as the Olympic Games gives a clear understanding of all the algorithms of modern management practice – it has been successfully used in the creation of our training programs. “

“For our youth, such lectures are a valuable experience. 2021 has been declared the Year of Youth in Sochi. Young people can apply all their knowledge, skills, express themselves in creativity. We create all the conditions for their self-realization, professional guidance. Young people are actively involved in the social life of the city. It is gratifying that Sochi is still the flagship of the volunteer movement, which originated in our city thanks to the preparation and holding of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, ”said the head of Sochi, Alexei Kopaigorodsky.
