June 2 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of the Philippines.

On this occasion, an exchange of congratulations took place between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines T. Lockin. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry in his telegram, in particular, noted that over the past years, friendly ties between the two states, based on the principles of mutual trust and respect, have acquired a truly partnership character, filled with weighty practical content. He expressed his conviction that further strengthening of constructive dialogue at various levels, promotion of cooperation in trade, economic, humanitarian and other spheres meets the long-term interests of both parties.

Russia and the Philippines have a rich joint history, on the first pages of which a visit to the archipelago in the 19th century. famous Russian navigators V.M. Golovin, O.E. Kotsebue and F.P. Litke, opening in Manila in the 1820s. The Russian Consulate General is actually the first diplomatic mission of our country in the region. Meanwhile, a number of external circumstances made it possible to formalize bilateral relations only in June 1976 during the visit of the President of the Republic of the Philippines F. Marcos to Moscow, when the Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations was signed.

Now the Philippines, one of the founding states of ASEAN, has become an important partner of Russia in the Asia-Pacific region.

Top-level contacts are regular. President R. Duterte made official visits to Russia in 2017 and 2019. Dialogue between leaders is maintained through phone calls and multi-stakeholder events. Effective interaction has been established between legislative bodies, relevant ministries and departments. The mechanism of inter-MFA consultations and the Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation are functioning. There is a mutual interest in the development of cultural and educational exchanges.

In the international arena, including within the framework of the UN and integration associations in the APR, Russia and the Philippines adhere to similar or coinciding approaches to solving global and regional problems.
