Accompanied by the deputy head of the FPS Andrei Artemchuk, assistant to the head of the FPS for organizing work with believers, priest Kirill Markovsky, the Chief Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar visited Detention Center-2 of the FPS of Russia in Moscow to congratulate the suspects, accused and convicted on the 10th anniversary of the opening the first in the history of the Russian penitentiary system, a prison synagogue in a pre-trial detention center.
The opening of a prayer room for persons professing Judaism in SIZO-2 in 2011 became possible thanks to the support of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FEOR) and the Chief Rabbinate of Russia. To date, the prayer room has been renovated, all conditions have been created for conducting Torah studies with rabbis.
During his visit to the remand prison, Rabbi Lazar made a joint prayer in the synagogue with the convicts of the Jewish faith and held a conversation with them about spiritual life. The Chief Rabbi of Russia spoke about the importance of freedom of religion, which is possible for a person even in prison.
Andrey Artemchuk, Deputy Head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for Moscow, noted that the leadership of the Federal Penitentiary Service is always open to representatives of traditional religious confessions.
At the end of the visit, the rabbi thanked the leadership of the Federal Penitentiary Service for their assistance in spiritual and educational work.
