A pack and transport platoon of the mountain motorized rifle brigade of the Southern Military District (YuVO), stationed in Karachay-Cherkessia, has begun delivering goods to the high-mountainous regions of the Caucasus Range.

The pack transport platoon is one of the logistics support units of the mountain brigade. There are more than 80 pack horses of the Karachai and Mongolian breeds in it. During planned tactical exercises, horses are formed into bundles. Each bunch of four horses is capable of carrying up to 250 kg of cargo and making a daily journey of 25-30 km.

All horses were given summer horseshoes and vaccinated against seasonal diseases. Horses’ diet includes fresh grass, which they consume while grazing in mountain pastures.

Before the start of the summer training period with a pack-transport platoon, we conducted special tactical exercises in mountainous and wooded areas with overcoming mountain and water obstacles, as well as special dressage at the training ground, where horses are taught to work in high mountains.

In the winter period of training, pack horses were used when performing combat training tasks in hard-to-reach mountainous terrain, when transporting goods in areas where the use of other types of transport is limited or impossible. Horses lifted a load weighing 90-100 kg on packs and acted in the interests of the mortar battery, carrying ammunition and weapons to the positions.
