Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko chaired a meeting of the organizing committee for the preparation and holding of the 44th World Chess Olympiad and Congress of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Moscow and Khanty-Mansiysk in 2022.

Aide to the President of Russia Igor Levitin, President of the International Chess Federation Arkady Dvorkovich, as well as heads of interested federal and regional executive authorities took part in the meeting.

By the decision of the organizing committee, an action plan was approved, which involves training in various areas: organizational and information work, drawing up a cultural program for guests and participants, organizing the work of volunteers, sanitary and epidemiological support.

Dmitry Chernyshenko noted that the Chess Olympiad is scheduled to be held from 1 to 31 July 2022 in Moscow and Khanty-Mansiysk. The capital will host a tournament among men’s and women’s sports teams, and Khanty-Mansiysk will host the Congress of the International Chess Federation and, for the first time in history, a tournament for people with disabilities.

Initially, these events were planned to be held in 2020, but due to the spread of coronavirus infection, it was decided to postpone them to 2022.

“Chess is loved in our country, and our athletes traditionally lead in major international tournaments. We expect that next year about 2,700 people from 185 countries of the world will take part in the tournament and congress, ”said Dmitry Chernyshenko.

Arkady Dvorkovich added: “The level of readiness for the World Chess Olympiad is high. It is necessary to approve a matrix of responsibility with all involved regions and structures in order to move on to the practical implementation of the activities of the organizational plan. “

The meeting also discussed the preparation and holding this year in Sochi of the FIDE World Chess Cup and the FIDE World Chess Cup for women.

The World Chess Cups in Sochi will be held from July 10 to August 8, 2021. The competition is proposed to be held in the entertainment center “Galaktika”, which meets all international standards and FIDE requirements. In addition, an additional chess program for children is planned during the sporting events. It will be organized in the Atom Hall of the Sirius Science and Arts Park.

“Sochi has all the necessary infrastructure for holding international competitions. These are sports facilities, hotels, and well-built transport logistics. It is planned that 206 athletes will take part in the FIDE Chess World Cup, and 103 athletes who won this right in accordance with the individual international rating, as well as following the results of the qualifying continental championships, will take part in the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup, ”added the vice prime minister.
