Junior specialists of the tank units of the combined arms army of the Western Military District (ZVO), stationed in the Leningrad Region, performed control firing exercises as part of a special exercise. They fired live shells from T-72 tanks at emerging and moving targets.

More than 100 servicemen hit targets imitating manpower and armored vehicles of a conventional enemy, located at a distance of 600 to 1800 meters in the daytime and at night. Targets could appear in three places, and the order of their appearance was not known to the crews before the start of the exercise. The gunner-operators fired at targets from 125-mm tank guns and 7.62-mm PKT machine guns at an average tank speed of about 6 kilometers per hour

More than 100 servicemen of tank units were involved in the exercise, about 30 units of weapons and military equipment were involved.
