Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation – Head of the Main Military-Political Directorate of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Colonel-General Andrei Kartapolov, took part in the eighth meeting of the Meeting of the Ministers of Defense of the ASEAN Member States and Dialogue Partners (SMOA Plus), which took place via videoconference.

In his speech, Colonel General Andrei Kartapolov informed the meeting participants about Russian approaches to key security issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

As a result of the event, a joint statement was adopted by the ministers of defense of the ASEAN member states and dialogue partners, aimed at further strengthening multilateral military cooperation.

“SMOA Plus” is a mechanism of interaction between the defense departments of ten Southeast Asian countries (ASEAN) and dialogue partner states (Australia, India, China, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia, USA, Japan), created in April 2010 at the initiative of Vietnam.

The goal of “SMOA Plus” is to provide favorable conditions for open and constructive discussion of defense and security issues, deepening trust and mutual understanding in the region, and establishing practical interaction between the military personnel of the participating countries.

The activities of specialists within the framework of “SMOA plus” are carried out in seven Expert Working Groups: on humanitarian demining, humanitarian assistance and emergency response, military medicine, ensuring maritime security, countering terrorism, organizing peacekeeping operations, and cyber security.
