Today the search cynological service of the EMERCOM of Russia celebrates its 25th anniversary. For a quarter of a century, four-legged rescuers have become permanent participants in rescue operations, thanks to which hundreds of human lives have been saved.

The first cynological crews were created in 1995 in the “Tsentrospas” detachment. Today the search cynological service of the department has 245 certified calculations. Of these: 174 crews are involved in the search and rescue service, 26 – in the mine search, 35 – in the mountain avalanche, 10 crews are working to find the dead.

In the era of technology, dogs continue to be indispensable helpers in rescue operations, able to locate casualties under rubble, locate strangers in difficult terrain, and accurately identify explosives.

Cynological units serve as part of the search and rescue and rescue military units of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, as well as specialized fire and rescue units of the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

Cynological service employees have participated in hundreds of search and rescue operations not only in Russia but also abroad. They took part in mine clearance in Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo, the Chechen Republic. Cynological calculations were also involved in the examination of debris due to the devastating earthquake in the Republic of Nepal, in the elimination of the consequences of a man-made disaster in Lebanon and aircraft crashes, as well as in the search for victims of the collapse of houses and lost in forests in various regions of our country.

Four-legged rescuers train daily to search for the lost and injured as quickly and efficiently as possible. Time in such emergencies is one of the main factors influencing the outcome of a rescue operation.

The training grounds simulate the real conditions in which dog handlers and their pets work: the mobility and flowability of rubble, windbreaks in the forest, inconvenient for passing surfaces and obstacles, as well as a “laid” explosive device. Personnel in tandem with pets perform training parachute jumps and descents from a helicopter.

On the basis of the Noginsk Rescue Center of the EMERCOM of Russia, 46 Dog Training Center operates, consisting of training, operational and support units. The unit trains dog handlers for the EMERCOM of Russia, other ministries and departments of our country and abroad.

Every year, all calculations are tested for admission to work as intended. The tests take place in several stages: obedience and dexterity – a special set of exercises to test the dexterity and execution of the dog handler’s commands; search for victims in the forest, at the man-made obstruction, in the mountainous area. In addition, tests of search cynological crews are being carried out among the rescue military units of the Russian Emergencies Ministry to search for and detect explosives.

Also, the search cynological crews of the EMERCOM of Russia participate in training camps and specialized competitions in various federal districts of Russia.

The plans of the search canine service of the department for the current year include further training of canine crews from the institutions and organizations of the Ministry of Emergencies of Russia. Their training will take place on the basis of the Vytegra training and rescue center and the Noginsk rescue center of the EMERCOM of Russia.
