Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Andrei Kartapolov on the eve of the Day of Remembrance and Mourning laid flowers at the burial sites of military leaders in the Kremlin wall.

The Day of Remembrance and Sorrow is the day of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. At dawn on June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union without declaring war. 2021 marks 80 years since the beginning of one of the bloodiest wars in history.

“Today, the Ministry of Defense, together with the Victory Commanders Memorial Fund, is laying down a new tradition. We made a decision every year on the eve of the Day of Remembrance and Mourning to gather at the Kremlin wall in order to remember with deep respect the commanders of the Victory, to honor the immortal feat of our people and the military valor of all the soldiers who defended the Fatherland and defeated Nazism, “said Andrei Kartapolov.

The deputy head of the military department recalled that the Nazis who attacked the Soviet Union did not plan to leave the population of a peaceful country alive, which they called “living space.”

“The first months were extremely difficult – we had to retreat, leave our cities, villages, but if it were not for these difficult first months, there would be no victory near Moscow, there would be no defeat of the Germans at Stalingrad, on the Kursk Bulge and many others glorious battles and battles that allowed us to come to Berlin and end this war, ”said the Deputy Minister of Defense.

According to Andrei Kartapolov, the people to whom flowers have been laid today took the most direct part in the approach of Victory: they commanded the fronts, were engaged in the restoration of combat effectiveness, conceived and organized great operations, which are now textbook for all military leaders. They forever inscribed their names in the history of the Motherland.

“This is very important today, when many, at the suggestion of our foreign partners, are trying to rewrite history, to belittle the role of the Soviet Union and the Red Army in that war. We cannot allow this to happen, ”stressed the deputy head of the military department.

The Deputy Minister of Defense added that one should always talk about the contribution that everyone made to the Victory – from a soldier to a marshal.

The event was also attended by relatives of the buried military leaders, members of the Public Council under the Russian Ministry of Defense, veterans, youth soldiers and servicemen of the Guard of Honor of the 154th Preobrazhensky Commandant Regiment.
