On June 22, the head of the regional Federal Penitentiary Service Igor Potapenko, deputy heads of the department and officers of the UIS came to the Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers of the Great Patriotic War and lay flowers and a wreath at the foot of the Mother Motherland monument.

The solemn and funeral ceremony dedicated to the Day of Memory and Mourning was attended by the heads of state authorities of the city and the region, representatives of the power departments of the Northern capital, veterans, heads of the main religious confessions, public organizations and guests of the city.

The ceremony ended with the passage of a company of the guard of honor, a banner group and a military orchestra.

Day of Remembrance and Mourning June 22 is one of the saddest dates in the history of Russia, on this day the Great Patriotic War began 80 years ago. In the hero city of Leningrad, whose inhabitants showed courage and courage in the struggle against the German fascist invaders in the difficult conditions of the enemy blockade, there were no families who did not know the sorrow of war. On this day, Petersburgers bring flowers to the Piskarevsky memorial, where over half a million people who died from hunger, cold and bombing are buried, to pay tribute to all who defended the country and won the Victory.

Funeral ceremonies of laying wreaths and flowers were also held at other memorials in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. Many of them were attended by employees of institutions subordinate to the Federal Penitentiary Service.

The day of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War runs like a red line through all the post-war decades. And today we honor the memory of those who, at the cost of their own lives, stood to death for the Motherland, fought on the front lines or worked sleeplessly in the rear, who went through the hardest years of the siege of Leningrad, continuing to work in a hungry, bombarded city.
