Servicemen of the Russian military base of the Southern Military District (YuVO) and representatives of the Ministry of Defense of Abkhazia took part in the events dedicated to the 27th anniversary of the start of the peacekeeping operation.

Participants of the commemorative events observed a minute of silence for the peacekeepers who died in the performance of their missions by laying flowers at the memorial on the embankment of the republican center near the monument to the servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation who carried out a peacekeeping mission in the Republic of Abkhazia from 1994 to 2008.

Also at the Russian military base in Gudauta, a rally was held, during which veterans and active servicemen were awarded medals and honorary badges from the hands of the command. At the end of the event, the servicemen marched in a solemn march.

The Russian military base in Abkhazia is the legal successor of the 131st separate motorized rifle brigade, which has been carrying out a peacekeeping mission in the republic since June 21, 1994.

Modern weapons and equipment of the Southern Military District in Abkhazia allow the personnel to effectively carry out tasks to maintain security and stability in the country.

For reference:

The peacekeeping operation in Abkhazia was carried out from 1994 to 2008 by the Collective Peacekeeping Forces of the Commonwealth of Independent States, formed by the decision of the Council of CIS Heads of State on the basis of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Officially, the activities of the peacekeeping contingent were terminated on September 1, 2008.

The introduction of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces into the zone of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict made it possible to disengage the armed formations of the conflicting parties, create security zones and limit weapons, which contributed to stopping bloodshed in the region, as well as creating the necessary conditions for a political dialogue between the parties.
