Servicemen of the Guards Airborne Svirskaya Red Banner Order of Kutuzov Division named after the 70th anniversary of the Great October Revolution took part in events dedicated to the successful conduct of the Svirsk-Petrozavodsk operation 77 years ago in the Leningrad Region (June 21 – August 9, 1944).

A representative of the Ivanovo Guards unit of the Airborne Troops of the Guard, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Bolotnikov, spoke at the rally and said that the unit as part of the 37th Rifle Guards Corps liberated the right bank of Ladoga and fought from Lodeynoye Pole to Pitkyaranta and in 1944 received the honorary name “Svirskaya” …

The servicemen of the guards unit took part in the opening of the monument, laid flowers at the military graves, visited the place where the Svir River was crossed during the offensive operation, visited the site of the battles, where the search detachments still find the remains of the Red Army soldiers who fell in battle.

For reference:

1005 days – from September 1941 to June 1944 – the Svir River was the leading edge of the Karelian Front. The Svirsky line became an insurmountable obstacle on the way of the enemy, who was trying to surround Leningrad with a second blockade ring. The defense of Lodeynoye Pole and Svirsky border made possible the existence of the legendary “Road of Life”.

The battles for the Svir border became an example of the greatest feat and heroism of the Soviet people. The successful actions of the troops at Lodeynoye Pole played an important role in the Great Patriotic War, allowing Finland to be withdrawn from the war and thereby redirected the Karelian units of Soviet troops to fight the enemy on other fronts.

For military exploits, more than 40 units and formations of the Karelian Front were awarded the title of “Svirsky”, 52 soldiers were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, 16 of them were servicemen of the Ivanovo formation of the Airborne Forces.
