In Volgograd, a unique transition of the pontoon units of the engineering troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, was completed.
For the first time in world practice, servicemen of engineering units used ferries designed to equip crossings over water obstacles as means of transportation on inland waterways.
During the passage of the route, solemn events were organized in more than 20 cities and towns. Events in Nizhny Novgorod, Ufa, Naberezhnye Chelny, Ulyanovsk, Cheboksary, Kazan, Samara and Saratov became especially numerous. Representatives of the city administrations presented to the pontoons symbolic plaques with the emblem of the settlements, which were today delivered by ferries to Volgograd and in a solemn ceremony were transferred to the panorama museum “Battle of Stalingrad”.
The solemn event in Volgograd was attended by the chief of the engineering troops of the RF Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Yuri Stavitsky, representatives of the city administration, employees of the local branch of the Russian Geographical Society, veterans, youth soldiers, representatives of military-patriotic organizations, guests and residents of the city.
The transition confirmed the correctness of the specified characteristics of the newest pontoon fleets in service, the capabilities of units and tugboats when moving long distances during movement on water, including in conditions of extreme wind waves.
The crews of four engineering brigades took part in the transition: the pontoon-bridge brigade of central subordination, as well as the engineer-sapper brigades of the Western, Central and Southern military districts. The total length of the track for a month of passing the route from three different regions of Russia in total amounted to more than 5 thousand km.
