On the Day of Remembrance and Mourning, servicemen of the Western Military District (ZVO) took part in lowering wreaths into the waters of the Gulf of Finland in memory of the Baltic sailors who died during the Great Patriotic War.

At 4 o’clock in the morning, the ship’s siren of the base minesweeper “Pavel Khenov” marked the air raid, symbolizing the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Chief of Staff of the Western Military District Alexei Zavizion lowered a wreath from the side of the boat. The funeral ceremony, which took place abeam the Tolbukhin lighthouse, ended with a minute of silence as a sign of memory and sorrow for the victims. During the ceremony, three volleys from small arms fireworks were fired.

The ceremony was attended by the crews of the Pavel Henov minesweeper, hydrographic, anti-sabotage and patrol boats.

Also, servicemen of the Western Military District laid wreaths at mass graves and at military memorial cemeteries located on the territory of 26 regions of the northwest and center of the country.
