In the institutions and bodies of the penitentiary system, during the action, various events were held aimed at familiarizing employees and persons in custody with reading fiction. The action was actively supported by human rights ombudsmen in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, representatives of regional libraries, branches of writers’ unions, public organizations, as well as teachers of higher educational institutions of the regions.
For example, the libraries of Tambov, Tomsk, the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug have significantly replenished the funds of the UIS libraries with books. O. Kislitsyna, Ombudsman for Human Rights in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, held talks with the inmates and handed over the books to correctional institutions in the region. Director of the Museum-Reserve V.D. Polenov donated hundreds of volumes of classical and modern literature to the libraries of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Tula Region. The Chelyabinsk Regional Specialized Library for the Visually Impaired and the Blind handed over to correctional institutions the literature of special formats for the visually impaired convicts.
The territorial bodies of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia managed to significantly increase the number of positive publications in the media about various events held within the framework of the action “Your friends are books”.
For example, in the Republic of Dagestan, the convicts met with the writer M. Zainulabidov. Convicts serving sentences in the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Kaliningrad Region, the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Republic of Mari El, the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania were engaged in the restoration and restoration of books. For several days, the Samara region hosted readers’ conferences, days of remembrance of favorite books, literary evenings with the participation of librarians. In the institutions of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service in the Perm Territory, performances based on well-known works, “Poetry Evenings” with the participation of writers and poets, were organized, prison trips to libraries were organized, and a creative photo contest “Time to Read” was held for employees.
During the campaign, it was possible to strengthen cooperation with regional unions of writers, libraries, museums, civil higher educational institutions, which will become the basis for the implementation of similar projects in the future.
