On June 22, separate telephone contacts took place between the Special Representative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation for BWI V.K. Safronkov with the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East T.Vennesland and the EU Special Representative for the BWI S.Koopmans.

The parties were unanimous in the importance of building up consolidated efforts in the interests of consolidating the ceasefire regime established around the Gaza Strip on May 21 this year. They pointed out the inadmissibility of incitement to violence, as well as unilateral actions that undermine the prospects for a two-state settlement.

In order to avoid relapses of the armed phase of the crisis, the need was noted for resuming the direct negotiation process between the Palestinians and the Israelis. The unique role of the “quartet” of international mediators in the composition of Russia, the United States, the UN and the EU is emphasized. In this context, the urgency of convening a meeting of the Quartet at the ministerial level was reiterated.

The Russian special envoy praised the efforts undertaken by the UN in coordination with all parties in the field of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.

It was agreed to continue the exchange of views on the situation and possible practical steps to revive the second-tier banks during the next teleconference of the special representatives of the Quartet.
