June 23 this year With 184 votes in favor, with two against (USA, Israel) and three abstentions (Brazil, Colombia and Ukraine), the 75th session of the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution, traditionally introduced by Cuba for 28 years, “The need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba ”. Russia, following its principled line of categorical rejection of unilateral sanctions, infringement of national sovereignty and interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states, supported the document and issued a corresponding statement. The voting results again confirmed the almost unanimous rejection of Washington’s restrictive policies by the international community.

The sanctions war unleashed by the White House to achieve its main goal – the removal of a government that it does not want – is a symptomatic example of open foreign policy pressure in the spirit of the notorious “Monroe Doctrine”, a clear disregard for human rights and, in general, humanitarian values.

This is becoming apparent especially now. In the context of the spread of coronavirus infection, when it is important for all countries to join forces to combat a common misfortune for all. Unfortunately, in the midst of a pandemic, Washington is “inflating” the anti-Cuban sanctions hysteria. We consider the campaign unleashed by the Americans to discredit Cuban doctors, sanctions against the biopharmaceutical industry, which endangered the health of thousands of ordinary people in many countries of the world, unscrupulous and inhuman. It is gratifying that Havana, even in such conditions, demonstrates amazing resilience, continues to provide assistance to other countries, providing its doctors, supplying medicines. We also consider the inclusion of Cuba on the American list of countries sponsoring terrorism to be the height of absurdity.

The Biden administration voted “against” this resolution, which is in line with Washington’s continued illegal, unfair and destructive actions against Cuba.

The principled position of Russia on the resolution remains unchanged. Together with the friendly Cuban people and the overwhelming majority of members of the international community, we will continue to strive for an early, complete and unconditional lifting of the blockade of the Island of Liberty.
