During the joint exercise of the forces of the permanent operational formation of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea and aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces, which is taking place in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea since June 25, a pair of MiG-31K aircraft and an anti-submarine aircraft flew to the Russian Khmeimim airbase in the Syrian Arab Republic from Russian airfields IL-38.

At present, the crews of the MiG-31K have begun to fulfill the tasks of mastering the airspace of the region. These aircraft can use the latest hypersonic missiles from the “Dagger” complex.

Long-range Tu-22M3 bombers also performed training flights over the Mediterranean Sea. “Airplane pilots have gained practical skills to perform missions in new geographic areas. Tasks were carried out to destroy the conditional enemy. The tasks were completed with high quality. Aviation technology has once again confirmed its high reliability. The flight personnel gained invaluable experience, “said (at the Russian Khmeimim airbase) the commander of long-range aviation, Lieutenant General Sergei Kobylash.

The basing of aircraft of this type at the Khmeimim airfield is carried out for the first time. This became possible as a result of the reconstruction of the second runway with a complete replacement of the coating and the installation of new lighting and radio equipment.

During the training flights, aviation technology and equipment will be tested in difficult climatic conditions, and aircraft crews will acquire practical skills for practicing training tasks in new geographic regions.

Within the framework of the joint exercise, the air defense (air defense) crews of the ships of the permanent operational formation of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea, in turn, took part in the training to repel enemy air attack weapons. According to the operational situation, the enemy aircraft received data on the location of the frigate at sea and headed for the target in order to make an airstrike with guided missiles. The enemy with the given characteristics was simulated electronically by the ship’s armament control system.

During training, ship crews of combat information posts (BIPs) detected and classified the target, and air defense calculations, when a conventional aircraft approached at a distance of destruction, destroyed it with electronic launches of anti-aircraft missiles, thereby preventing a missile strike on ships.

According to the plan of the exercise, five ships of the Russian Navy (including the missile cruiser Moskva, frigates Admiral Essen and Admiral Makarov), as well as two submarines Stary Oskol and Rostov-on-Don, together with anti-submarine aircraft Tu-142MK, Il-38, long-range bombers Tu-22M3 and MiG-31K aircraft will perform combat training missions to ensure the security of the Khmeimim airbase and the Tartus logistics center of the Russian Navy.
