The expedition of the Russian Geographical Society began work in a remote, inaccessible area of the Kamchatka Peninsula – Vestnik Bay.

The delivery of the search party to the area of work – more than 100 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, was originally planned with the involvement of ships of the Pacific Fleet, however, the high roll-off on this section of the coast forced us to consider other, safer options. As a result, the group, special search equipment and property are transported to Vestnik Bay by Mi-8 helicopters from the helicopter squadron of the Troops and Forces in the North-East of Russia. According to the plan of the expedition, 7 flights were carried out during which about 5 tons of food, fuel and lubricants, technical equipment were brought to the camp.

A large hydrographic boat of the Pacific Fleet is located at the site of the prospecting work.

A field camp with all the necessary infrastructure has already been deployed. The servicemen of the Pacific Fleet ensure the safety of the expedition, in particular, the protection of the camp and the search area from wild animals.

For reference:

The expedition of the Russian Geographical Society is working in the area where, based on the analysis of archival documents, searches are carried out for the American plane that fell during the Second World War. During the period of hostilities over Kamchatka, the routes of American aircraft ran, which bombed the fortifications of militaristic Japan in the Northern Kuriles. Some airplanes, which were damaged during combat missions, did not reach the airfields and fell in the south of Kamchatka.
