Today, in the military garrison of the Northern Fleet – the village of Sputnik, on the territory of a separate marine brigade, commemorative events were held in honor of the marines who died during the counter-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus.

The marines laid wreaths and flowers at the monument to the fallen soldiers, rested in memory of the dead with a minute of silence and a three-time volley from an AK-74. After a short meeting, a solemn march of the brigade’s units took place.

A separate airborne assault battalion of the Northern Fleet marines, reinforced by servicemen from other parts of the Northern Fleet, took part in hostilities in Chechnya and Dagestan in 1995, 1999 and 2000. During the first trip, 82 people died. Their names are inscribed on a monument erected on the territory of the Marine Corps Brigade in June 1995.

For participation in hostilities, hundreds of marines of the Northern Fleet were awarded state awards. 10 of them received the title of Hero of Russia. Three: Sergeant Vladimir Tatashvili, Lieutenant Yuri Kuryagin and Major General Alexander Otrakovsky – posthumously.

Since 1995, June 26 is celebrated in the Northern Fleet as the Day of Remembrance for the Marines who died in the North Caucasus.
