A solemn meeting dedicated to the 81st anniversary of the founding of the 121st Guards Red Banner Sevastopol Bomber Aviation Regiment of Long-Range Aviation was held in the Saratov region.
The event began with the formation of the personnel of the military unit. The State Flag of the Russian Federation and the Battle Banner of the regiment were delivered. Officers, warrant officers, sergeants and soldiers, as well as civilian employees were awarded medals, certificates and valuable gifts.
“For 81 years, the regiment has undergone a glorious evolution from combat use of TB-3 aircraft during the Great Patriotic War to modern missile carriers Tu-95MS, Tu-160. During its heroic history, 19 Heroes of the Soviet Union were brought up in the regiment, two of them were awarded this title twice, and two Heroes of the Russian Federation, having inscribed in the annals of our Fatherland the names and deeds of warriors-aviators who have become a national and world heritage. The current generation of warriors-aviators sacredly honors the lessons of their predecessors, adequately fulfills the tasks of ensuring the safety of their homeland, ”emphasized the commander of the aviation regiment, Colonel Alexander Symonenko.
Created in the pre-war years, the regiment has passed a glorious battle path, passing on the best traditions of the guards from generation to generation.
Already on June 24, 1941, the first sorties were made to the positions of the Nazi invaders.
For the courage shown in the battles for the Motherland, for the perseverance and heroism on August 18, 1942, the regiment was named “Guards”.
In commemoration of victories and distinctions in hostilities during the liberation of the Crimean peninsula, the regiment was given the honorary name “Sevastopol”.
On August 18, 1945, the regiment was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for exemplary performance of command assignments in battles with the Nazi invader.
For heroism and courage shown in battles with the enemy during the Great Patriotic War, 17 aviators were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Two aviators – Pavel Andreevich Taran and Vasily Nikolaevich Osipov – were twice awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
In peacetime, for courage and heroism when acting in a critical situation, on September 18, 2003, Guard Lieutenant Colonel Deineko Yuri Mikhailovich was awarded the title of Hero of Russia (posthumously).
In the 80s, the crews of the regiment took part in the hostilities in Afghanistan.
In 2015, the Aviation Regiment was awarded the St. George Banner.
The regiment’s crews are constant participants in parades, systematically perform flights according to the strategic containment plan in the zones of national interests of the Russian Federation.
At the end of the 2020 academic year, the regiment was recognized as the best in the Aerospace Forces.
