Rapid tests will detect the disease at an early stage and begin effective treatment faster.

Due to the increase in the incidence of COVID-19 in Moscow, doctors will consider all cases of ARVI as a potential coronavirus. Such patients will need to self-isolate before receiving a negative PCR test. And in addition to the PCR test, they and people living with them will be given a rapid test for antigen to coronavirus, the result of which will be ready within 15-30 minutes. This will allow you to identify the disease at an early stage and begin treatment faster.

“The Indian strain in Moscow has actually supplanted all the others. It differs from the previously acting strains. First, it is several times more infectious than the Wuhan. Secondly, its incubation period is much shorter – about three to five days. Thirdly, he has other symptoms – they are almost impossible to distinguish from a common cold: runny nose, sore throat, low temperature. Distinctive features of the previous strain, such as loss of smell, taste, dry cough, have become much less common. Over the past two weeks, Moscow has broken through all the thresholds for the incidence of ARVI among the adult population. At the same time, it is summer now (not the season of viral diseases), and we subsequently diagnose almost all cases of ARVI as COVID-19, ”she explained.

Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.

Rapid coronavirus antigen tests are not a substitute for PCR. The final diagnosis will continue to be based on PCR testing.

“But a positive antigen test result will allow us to assume that a person is most likely to have COVID-19, to start immediate treatment and give the necessary antiviral drugs. We hope that this measure will allow to provide effective treatment at an earlier stage and thus, on the one hand, reduce the number of severe cases, on the other hand, quickly interrupt the chains of the spread of the virus, ”the deputy mayor said.

If the result of the rapid test turns out to be positive, isolation will also be observed by those living with the patient until the PCR results are obtained.
