Psychologists at the women’s correctional colony No. 28, located in the city of Berezniki, have developed and implemented the “Step to Oneself” program for convicts with alcohol addiction.

The relevance of the program is due to the fact that more than a third of all crimes in Russia, according to statistics, are committed in a state of alcoholic intoxication. The program provides for an integrated approach, within which convicts participate in psychocorrectional activities, receive information about the dangers of alcohol and drugs, and are involved in work, healthy lifestyles and physical activities. The main goal is to help form a new, healthy lifestyle, if the convict himself wishes and is active, to develop the ability to live in a society without drinking alcohol.

This work is aimed at developing in convicts the skills of a healthy lifestyle with attitudes towards refusal from alcohol, education and development of resistance to unfavorable socio-psychological factors and influences, psychological correction of the personality. As the psychologists of IK-28 note, the program has proven its effectiveness: its participants have a positive dynamics in behavior.

As a rule, alcoholism contributes to the distortion of the perception of existing problems, providing temporary relief, which gradually leads to the inaccessibility of other coping behaviors. The conflict between the growing need for alcohol and the condemnation of society leads to the activation of defense mechanisms. This is how the patient’s uncriticality to his own state is formed, the distortion of the internal picture of the disease – alcoholic anosognosia (non-recognition or denial of dependence on alcohol or underestimation of the severity of the disease). For example, while relatives, relatives or friends have long been sounding the alarm, a person suffering from alcohol dependence persistently repeats that everything is in order in his life and alcohol does not bother him in any way. He convinces himself and his surroundings that he can not drink if he wants to. But in practice, it proves the opposite.

It is not uncommon for sufferers to admit that they have some drinking problem, but they often feel that things are not bad enough to completely stop drinking. They make attempts to switch to lighter drinks and control the dose, remaining unreasonably convinced that, if necessary, they can stop drinking alcohol at any time.

One of the signs of alcoholic anosognosia is dissimulation – the concealment of the existing symptoms of an already developed disease. Patients minimize or hide anything related to alcohol use from family members and doctors. They downplay the amount of alcohol consumed, the frequency of drinking, and the degree of intoxication.

To defeat alcohol addiction, you first need to get rid of anosognosia, that is, get rid of illusions and false ideas. Take a sober look and accept your problem, admit to addiction, and only after that start treating the disease itself. This is one of the tasks of the Step to Yourself program.

Defrosting feelings is another of the main tasks of the program. Control over their own emotions allows participants to work with their current state, and, if necessary, resist sharp “outbursts” that may periodically occur.

Long-term use of alcoholic beverages leads to moral and moral decline of the personality. There are strong changes in the worldview, the dependent person simply does not have the ability to adequately perceive reality. The system of spiritual values is violated. The Step to Self program helps you regain faith in yourself. Accept the fact that there is a problem and build a new personality with correct and healthy life values.

The psychotherapy group is a suitable convalescent environment for developing the necessary communication skills. In an artificially created micro-society, participants learn to communicate with each other, build healthy relationships, solve problems without aggression and scandals.

As the psychologists of IK-28 note, the Step to Oneself program is an action program! It appeals to the conscience of the addict, to his soul and inner potential. The personal motivation of the program participant for change and recovery is very important here. The program helps to accept and comprehend the problem, to admit to oneself in dependence, to understand the root cause of its formation and to find a new meaning and purpose in life.

The first step of the program implies the recognition of their powerlessness in the face of the disease and the fact that they have lost control over their use. This step can be called the pivot point for the beginning of recovery.

The program uses psychological education, individual psychological counseling, psychocorrection, group and training sessions.

One of the principles underlying the experiment is its consistency. Each stage prepares the next, the content and methods of providing psychological assistance are expanded, ensuring the formation of a psychotherapeutic space, including all available opportunities for providing psychological support and support.

The psychocorrectional program “Step to yourself” includes 9 group psychocorrectional, psychoeducational sessions and autogenic trainings. lasting 1.5-3 hours. The psychocorrectional group consists of 8 – 12 people. In the most general form, the goals of the group are defined as the disclosure, analysis, awareness and processing of the participant’s problems, his intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts and the correction of inadequate attitudes, attitudes, emotional and behavioral stereotypes based on the analysis and use of interpersonal interaction. The main instrument of the therapeutic effect is the psychotherapeutic group, which makes it possible to gain an understanding and correction of the participant’s problems through interpersonal interaction and group dynamics.

Also, psychologists of IK-28 note that psychological work with alcohol-dependent convicts should be built in parallel with the therapeutic effect on patients, and also be carried out with families close to convicts, because family and loved ones are a very important participant in the prevention process.
