To make sure that the Labradors do not overeat, the Chihuahua did not have tartar, and the Spitz’s hair was always combed out – Moscow veterinarians talked about the peculiarities of caring for the dogs of the most popular breeds in the capital.

Moscow veterinarians, who are receiving appointments in city clinics, spoke about which breeds of dogs are most often chosen by residents of the metropolis and what are the main features of caring for them. According to experts from the capital Veterinary Committee, Most often Muscovites choose small and medium-sized dogs.

The leaders among the most popular “babies” are Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranian and Chihuahua. Particular attention should be paid to the coat of Spitz and Yorkshire terriers: it is soft, thick and long, prone to rolling and formation of tangles. The dog needs to be combed out at least twice a week, and cut as needed. Seasonal haircuts are mandatory in the summer heat, so that the animal does not disturb thermoregulation. In addition, it is worth cutting off the bangs or pinning the hair that has grown on the head and muzzle, which interferes with vision. You can cut your dog at home on your own or entrust this work to a groomer – a pet care specialist.

For combing out, it is recommended to use combs, brushes, combs and slicker brushes. Made of plastic, rubber, wood, or metal, they can be more or less rigid. The right tool is selected depending on the length and structure of the pet’s coat.

Chihuahuas do not have special needs for grooming their hair, but they need to be regularly taken to the veterinary dentist – it turns out that they are more likely to suffer from tartar and gum disease. At home, you can carry out prophylaxis – brush your dog’s teeth, chew on special sticks and bones that help prevent the appearance of tartar.

Among medium-sized dogs, the most popular are Labradors, Basenji and Biglies. Bred as hunting companions and assistants, they are friendly and agile.

Labradors need careful diet selection – these dogs overeat and are prone to being overweight. It is better to choose a professional ready-made food or plan a menu based on natural products with the help of a veterinarian. It is necessary to take into account the age, activity and already gained weight of the pet. You will need to give food in small, fixed portions several times a day without additional treats and snacks.

Among large breeds, Muscovites prefer German shepherds and huskies – they are smart, strong and active dogs. Experts note that their owners should devote a lot of time to education and training, physical activity and active long walks. The weight of adult German Shepherds can reach 45 kilograms, and the size from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail is 1.4 meters; husky weight – 30 kilograms, and height – up to 60 centimeters at the withers. Physical activity is the key to the health of these dogs. It is recommended to spend at least 2–2.5 hours a day with them outdoors. Time can be spread over two or three walks. Dog handlers can help with training and education, as well as choose exercises for training and games.

Also, do not forget that all dogs older than three months must be registered with state veterinary institutions. In addition, animals must be vaccinated against rabies and leptospirosis.

There are 26 state veterinary clinics in the capital. You can make an appointment online (on or in the Moscow State Services mobile application) or by calling +7 (495) 612-04-25. Moscow veterinarians conduct about 100 thousand consultations a year for dog owners.
